The flicker of light from the campfire was comforting. Kate sat with her rifle in her lap, keeping watch for predators that might see the horses as easy prey. She could hear the herd moving around, snuffling and nickering softly. Gazing up, she glimpsed thousands of stars twinkling in the night sky. There was no moon and the stars seemed so bright, she wanted to reach out and touch them.

She thought about the last year and everything that had happened in her life. She lost her father and Christopher but she gained Sam and more friends than she’d ever had. She owned her own ranch and after tomorrow, she would have horses, too. And a burro. She’d decided to name it Cocoa, for its brown coat, and the name would work whether it was a jack or a jenny.

A sound behind her startled her.

“It’s me, Kate. It’s my turn to take watch.” Sam appeared out of the darkness. He’d wanted to sit with her earlier but sensed she wanted some time to herself, so he contented himself with lying against a rock, watching her instead. He’d become good at reading her emotions and knew the exact moment she’d started thinking about her family. She didn’t know it but she didn’t hide her feelings very well. He knew when she was happy, or sad, or angry, or filled with desire. He knew every inch of her body and the deepest depths of her soul. There was only one thing he didn’t know about. “Tell me about the money.”

A strange expression crossed her face then she burst out laughing. “You still think I robbed a bank, don’t you?”

He sat down beside her and took her hand in his, rubbing his thumb in lazy circles across her palm.

Chills shot up her spine. If there hadn’t been a half dozen men sleeping fifteen feet from them, she would’ve shown him exactly what his touch did to her. Instead, she snuggled closer and began speaking.

“My mother was from a very wealthy family. She grew up in Philadelphia and when she decided to marry my father and move west with him, her parents told her if she did, they’d disown her. They didn’t think he was good enough for her. She chose my father over their money and never had contact with them again. I told you that she died giving birth to me.”

Sam nodded.

“My father wrote them, letting them know she died. He never heard back and left it at that. When I was six, he received a letter from a law firm in Philadelphia. My mother’s parents had been killed in a railway accident and upon the reading of the will, it was discovered that they hadn’t disinherited her. She was their only child and they left everything to her. Since she had already died, the money passed to my father through her estate. He set up a trust and split it between me and Christopher.”

“How much money, if you don’t mind me asking?”

“One hundred and twenty-five thousand dollars each.
